How IRLC students celebrated Maslenitsa

 17 march 2024

At first, students learned about traditions of this holiday in class and tried pancakes (blini) with different fillings during breaks. Then, they discussed with their teachers where to go to see how Maslenitsa was celebrated in Moscow.

It was sunny at the weekends, so students of various groups with their teachers went to Kolomenskoye Museum Reserve. They did a circle dance and played trickle there. Another group visited Muzeon Park of Arts where they danced kalinka and tied ribbons on the wish tree. Our students even attended the ice show “Maslenitsa”. Of course, they ate blini everywhere! Blini with condensed milk and jam were the leaders.

Students of three groups said goodbye to Maslenitsa in the woods where they went by a suburban train with their teachers. Then they walked through the woods for a long time and finally went out to a glade where they saw with their own eyes how Maslenitsa has been celebrated in Russia since long ago.

The students found out that a snow town was a real fortress which was not easy to conquer, that the Maslenitsa Scarecrow burnt brightly to make the summer hotter, that Russians were kind, friendly and hospitable. They took part in the traditional entertainment and ate a lot of pancakes (blini).

The students said: “The way was long and hard but we are glad to come here because it is interesting and fun. We have never seen anything like this”.
