Russian Language Programmes are available for foreign students at all levels during the academic year (September - June) and during the summer courses (July - August). The minimum period of study is 4 weeks.

Upon arriving at the Institute all students are offered an assessment test on the basis of which the right level is recommended. Groups are formed in accordance with the results of the test, duration and purpose of study. Groups normally consist of 8-10 students.

The main objective of the programme is to build and develop practical Russian language skills such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. Special attention is paid to the following aspects:

    • fluency and accuracy in oral communication;
    • listening for comprehension and information;
    • writing skills;
    • vocabulary development
    • Russian grammar
    • phonetics (as part of every lesson).


For beginners and elementary level students the Institute offers a full-time tuition programme (26 academic hours per week). The programme includes the general Russian language course, grammar, phonetics and oral speech training.


For students of intermediate and advanced levels we offer:

a) A full-time tuition programme providing 26 academic hours per week (5 days a week). The programme includes 18 academic hours of Russian language studies and 8 hours of elective subjects (chosen by the student) that currently include:

    • Colloquial Russian;
    • Difficulties of Russian grammar;
    • Language of Russian Mass Media;
    • "The Russian World";
    • Business Russian;
    • Russian History and Literature.


A part-time tuition programme providing 18 academic hours per week (3 days a week). This programme is more focused on oral communication skills.

Upon successful completion of their programme students receive a certificate. They also have an option to take a test and obtain a state-approved certificate.

This programme is designed for those who wish to enter one of the faculties at the MSU or to prepare themselves for undergraduate or postgraduate studies. The programme includes:

  • General Russian Language course;
  • Russian for Academic Purposes course;
  • Courses for subjects in the humanities and sciences.

Class sizes are kept small. Groups consist of no more than 10 students in the Russian language classes and no more than 20 students in the classes in other subjects. Academic curriculum includes lessons five days a week, 6-8 academic hours per day. The course could be one academic year (two semesters) or one and a half academic years (three semesters). At the end of academic year the students take exams in Russian and subjects of their specialization. After passing the course examinations, students receive corresponding certificates. These allow them to enroll in one of the main faculties of the MSU according to their specialization.

One-year programme:

  • Duration of study: September 2017 – June 2018
  • Start date: 29 August – 1 October 2017
  • Exams: June 2018
  • Tuition: $5100
  • Payments should be made as follows: $3400 - September 2017; $1700 - February 2018.


Expanded programme:

  • Duration of study: March 2018 – June 2019
  • Holidays: June – August 2018
  • Start date: 01 March – 30 March 2018
  • Exams: June 2019
  • Tuition: $6800
  • Payments should be made as follows: $5100 - March 2018; $1700 - February 2019.


Who is it for:

People of any nationality over the age of 16 who are studying or want to start studying Russian language.

When can you start:

Students can arrive and start studying any time between 03 of July and 27 of  August. Application should be sent at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the course.

How long can you study for:

The minimum study period is 3 weeks and the maximum is 8 weeks.


What are the available programmes and prices:

The full-time programme consists of 24 academic hours spread over 5 days and costs $215 per week.

The part-time programme consists of 20 academic  spread over 4 days and costs $190.

 NOTE: 1 academic hour = 45 minutes


How is the programme structured:

Groups are formed according to students’ level of Russian language. On arrival all students should complete an entrance test and are placed in groups based on the results. Each group contains no more than 9 students. Students of Intermediate level and above study Russian language 3 days per week and, depending on the length of programme, the remaining one or two days are spent studying a seminar of the students’ choice. The available seminars are: Russian literature, history and culture; business Russian; phonetics; Russian idioms; Verbs of motion, preparation for the State Russian as a Foreign Language Proficiency Test (TRKI), etc. Students of a beginner or elementary level study Russian language on a 5-day a week intensive programme.


Where can students stay:

Students can stay in Moscow State University student accommodation, for $11-13 per day .



Free excursions around Moscow are included in the programme of study.

Excursions outside of Moscow (for example to Tver’, Yasnaya Polyana and other interesting places) are offered on the weekends at an extra cost.

The course of professional training (1-2 semesters) allows to obtain the following qualification: Teacher of Russian as a foreign language (RFL). Distant tuition is available.

Refresher courses (1 to 6 months) offers lessons on methodology of Russian as a foreign language teaching. The flexible tuition programme allows to concentrate on those aspects, which are more interesting and vital for the students.

The traineeship (1 to 10 months) is based on an individual time-table and hence is particularly convenient while carrying out research work. The trainees visit classes and tutorials of the teachers of the IRLC; work in Moscow libraries.

Upon completion of the programme students and trainees receive corresponding certificates.

The programmes are designed for Russian and foreign citizens who speak Russian at advanced level (at least TORFL-3/C1).
